If your CRIF report shows something wrong, you have a legal right to get it corrected. Raise a dispute with CRIF High Mark or with the lender that reported the entry, attach proof, and the complaint has to be resolved within 30 calendar days. If it isn't, RBI rules entitle you to ₹100 for every day of delay. Here's how to do it without losing a month to back-and-forth.
New to any of this? Start with our CRIF score guide, then come back.
First, pin down exactly what's wrong
A vague complaint takes longer to resolve than a specific one. Open your full CRIF report (free here) and write down four things for the entry you're disputing:
- The lender's name exactly as it appears on the report
- The account number shown against it
- What the report says, for example "active, ₹42,000 outstanding"
- What it should say, for example "closed on 12 March 2026, nil outstanding"
These are the errors we see most often:
- A loan or card that belongs to someone else, usually a name or PAN mix-up
- A loan you closed that still shows as active or overdue
- Late payments in months when you paid on time
- A wrong outstanding balance, or a card limit that's missing, which makes your utilisation look far worse than it is
- Your own details spelled wrong, which is often what causes someone else's account to attach to your file
Where to raise a CRIF dispute
You have two routes, and both end in the same place.
Route 1: through CRIF High Mark
Use the dispute option on the CRIF High Mark website. You'll be asked for your details, the account in question and what's wrong with it. CRIF then takes it up with the lender, because only the lender can change the data it reported. Save the complaint reference number you get.
Route 2: through the lender
Write to the lender's customer service or grievance team with the same details. This is often faster for a closed-loan status or a wrong balance, since the lender holds the proof already. Ask them to confirm in writing that they've sent a correction to all four bureaus, not just to one.
If the entry is badly wrong, or you need it fixed before a loan application, do both. They don't cancel each other out.
What proof to attach
Keep every file under the size limit on the form, and use clear scans. A blurry photo of a closure letter is a common reason a complaint bounces back.
How long a CRIF dispute takes
Under RBI rules, a credit report complaint must be resolved within 30 calendar days, split as 21 days for the lender to investigate and send corrected data, and 9 days for the bureau to update your report. Straightforward cases, like a closed loan with a clean NOC, often finish faster.
Two things are worth knowing while you wait:
- You're owed compensation if it slips. Since 26 April 2024, RBI's framework entitles you to ₹100 for every calendar day a complaint stays unresolved beyond 30 days, paid by whichever party caused the delay.
- Your score won't change the moment the lender agrees. The corrected data still has to reach CRIF and be processed. Lenders report on the 9th, 16th, 23rd and last day of each month, so allow a little time after the fix is confirmed. If nothing moves, see why your CRIF score isn't updating.
If the dispute is rejected or ignored
Escalate in this order. Keep your complaint reference number with you at every step.
- The lender's grievance officer. Every regulated lender has one, with contact details on its website. Send your evidence again and ask for a written reason if they disagree.
- The nodal officer. Both the lender and the bureau have a designated officer for complaints that aren't resolved at the first level.
- The RBI Ombudsman. If you haven't got a satisfactory answer within 30 days, file a complaint at cms.rbi.org.in. It's free, it's online, and credit information companies come under the scheme.
Include your complaint number, the dates you raised each step, and copies of the same evidence. Most cases that reach this stage are decided on paperwork, so keep yours in order.
What a dispute can't do
A dispute corrects wrong information. It doesn't delete correct information.
- Genuine late payments stay. If you paid 45 days late in March, that's accurate, and it remains on the record.
- "Settled" stays too. If you settled a loan for less than you owed, the status is correct. Some lenders will update it to "closed" if you later pay the waived amount, but that's a negotiation, not a dispute. Our guide to what written off means covers this.
- Nobody can remove accurate entries for a fee. If an agency promises to wipe your report clean, walk away. You'll lose the money and still have the entry.
How to avoid the next error
- Get a closure letter every time. Ask for an NOC when you close any loan, and keep it. It's the single most useful document in a dispute.
- Keep your details consistent. Use the same spelling of your name and the same address format with every lender, matching your PAN.
- Check your report quarterly. Errors are cheapest to fix when they're fresh and you still have the paperwork.
- Read the bureau's alerts. CRIF sends an SMS or email when a lender views your report, which is also a quick way to spot an application you didn't make.
Once the record is clean, these nine fixes are the fastest way to push the score up.
Frequently asked questions
Q.1 How do I raise a dispute with CRIF High Mark?
Use the dispute option on the CRIF High Mark website, giving the lender's name, the account number, what the report says and what it should say, with proof attached. You can also write to the lender's grievance team, which reports the correction to the bureau.
Q.2 How long does a CRIF dispute take?
Up to 30 calendar days under RBI rules: 21 days for the lender to investigate and 9 days for the bureau to update your report. Simple cases are often resolved sooner.
Q.3 What if my CRIF dispute isn't resolved in 30 days?
You are entitled to ₹100 for every calendar day of delay beyond 30 days, under the RBI compensation framework in force since 26 April 2024. If the complaint is still unresolved, escalate to the lender's nodal officer and then to the RBI Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in.
Q.4 Can I remove a settled or written-off entry from my CRIF report?
Not through a dispute, because the entry is accurate. Some lenders agree to update the status to closed once you pay the amount that was waived. Get that agreement in writing before you pay.
Q.5 Is there a fee to raise a CRIF dispute?
No. Raising a dispute with a credit bureau or a lender is free, and so is filing a complaint with the RBI Ombudsman.
