A CRIF score is a three-digit number from 300 to 900 issued by CRIF High Mark, one of four credit bureaus licensed by the Reserve Bank of India. Lenders pull it to judge whether to approve your loan or card. A score of 730 or above is generally healthy. You can check yours free, and because checking your own score is a soft inquiry, it never lowers it.
Most lenders will say yes. About eight points short of the best rates.

The question we hear most
They do. A lot of people have only ever heard of CIBIL, so a CRIF score can feel like a lesser, unofficial number. It isn't, and the reasons are worth knowing before you apply for anything.
CRIF High Mark is licensed by the Reserve Bank of India under CICRA 2005, exactly like TransUnion CIBIL, Experian and Equifax. India has no "second tier" of credit bureau.
Banks and NBFCs have to report your loans and cards to every bureau they're a member of. The EMI you paid last month lands in your CRIF credit report just as it lands in your CIBIL one.
CRIF High Mark has particularly strong coverage in NBFC, retail, MSME and microfinance lending. If your next loan comes from an NBFC, a small finance bank or a microfinance lender, there's a good chance your CRIF score is the one they open.
The lender decides which report to pull, and it won't check with you first. So your CRIF report deserves as much care as your CIBIL report. It may be the only one a lender reads.
Treat your CRIF score the way you treat your CIBIL score. You can't know in advance which one the loan officer will see.
The basics
It's CRIF High Mark's one-number summary of how you've handled credit.
The bureau takes your repayment record, the loans and cards you hold and how much of your limits you use, and turns all of it into a number between 300 and 900. A higher number tells a lender you're less of a risk. A lower one means more questions, a higher rate, or a no.
CRIF High Mark issues two kinds of score. The personal CRIF score is about you as an individual, and it's the one this page covers. There's also a business score for companies and MSMEs, which lenders use when a business borrows.
CRIF score range
Your CRIF High Mark score runs from 300 to 900. Anything from 730 up is generally healthy, and 750 or more gets you the best terms. Here's what each band tends to mean when you actually apply.
| CRIF score | Rating | What usually happens when you apply |
|---|---|---|
| 300–549 | Poor | Most banks will turn you down. A secured card or a loan against an FD is the realistic place to start. |
| 550–649 | Weak | Some NBFCs will lend, usually at a high rate or with collateral or a guarantor. |
| 650–729 | Fair | You can get approved, but expect higher interest and smaller limits than the headline offers. |
| 730–749 | Good | Most lenders approve. Your rate is usually about 1 to 2% above the best on offer. |
| 750–900 | Excellent | You get the best rates, higher limits and quicker decisions, plus room to negotiate fees. |
Inside your CRIF High Mark score
Two of them do most of the work. Pay on time and keep your card balances low, and you've covered about two-thirds of your score.
These weightings are FixMyScore estimates based on how Indian credit scores usually behave. CRIF High Mark doesn't publish the exact weights in its model.
The score is one line at the top. The report underneath explains it.
Your name, date of birth, PAN, addresses and phone numbers as lenders have them. A spelling mismatch here is one of the most common reasons someone else's loan ends up on your report.
Every loan and card: the lender, the type, the sanctioned amount, what's outstanding, and whether it's active, closed, settled or written off.
A month-by-month grid of days past due (DPD). "000" means you paid on time. "030" means you were 30 days late that month.
Each time a lender checked you after you applied. Five applications in two months looks like credit hunger, and your score will show it.
Two bureaus, two numbers
You check your CIBIL score and see 768. You check your CRIF score and see 742. Nothing has gone wrong.
CRIF High Mark and TransUnion CIBIL are both RBI-licensed, both score you from 300 to 900, and both build your report from what lenders send them. But each bureau runs its own scoring model, so the same history lands a little differently. The data can differ too. A lender might report to one bureau a few days before the other, or a small NBFC might report more fully to one of them. A gap of 20 to 60 points is common and isn't a warning sign on its own.
If it's new, give it a few weeks to reach the second bureau. If it's older than a couple of months, ask the lender to report it and raise a dispute with the bureau that's missing it.
Neither one over the other. You can't choose which bureau a lender checks, so the only sensible goal is to keep both healthy.

This takes about ten minutes. Keep your PAN card nearby.
CRIF changes its screen labels now and then. If something looks different, look for the free annual credit report option.
Before you apply
There's no single cut-off. These are the ranges where approvals usually start to come easily, based on what lenders commonly look for.
Unsecured, so lenders are strict. The best rates tend to start around 750. Some NBFCs go lower and charge for it.
Entry cards are easier. Premium cards and high limits usually want 750 or more.
The property is security, so there's more flexibility. Your score still decides how good the rate is.
Lenders usually read your personal CRIF score alongside the business's own record.
Indicative ranges, not lender policy. Your income, existing EMIs and job stability also count.
Raise the number
Start where the weight is: paying on time and using less of your credit limit. The rest helps, but those two do the heavy lifting.
Set autopay for at least the minimum due on each card and EMI. One payment that slips 30 days stays in your DPD grid for years.
On a ₹1 lakh limit, aim for a statement balance under ₹30,000. Paying before the statement is generated helps more than paying after.
An account that's still overdue hurts more than an old closed one. Bring it back to zero DPD before you do anything else.
It anchors the age of your credit history. If it has no annual fee, use it now and then and let it be.
Each application adds a hard inquiry. Check your eligibility first and apply only where you're likely to get a yes.
A loan that isn't yours, or a closed loan still marked active, can quietly cost you points. Get it corrected.
From 1 July 2026, RBI's amended credit reporting rules require lenders to send updates to credit bureaus four times a month: on the 9th, 16th, 23rd and the last day. Before that, lenders reported every fortnight (from 1 January 2025), and before that, once a month.
In practice, a payment you make today can show up in your CRIF report within about a week, once your lender reports it and CRIF processes it.
Checking your own score is a soft inquiry. Check it daily if you like; nothing changes.
Both bureaus hold the same RBI licence, and lenders can pull either one.
It usually hurts. Your credit history gets shorter and your utilisation goes up.
Income isn't in your credit report at all. Lenders check it separately.
"Settled" stays on your report and tells lenders you paid less than you owed. Close in full if you can.
Lenders also weigh your income, existing EMIs and job. A strong CRIF score gets you in the door.
Wrong entry on your CRIF report
If something on your CRIF report is wrong, the law gives you the right to have it corrected, on a fixed clock.
If they miss the deadline, RBI's compensation framework entitles you to ₹100 for every calendar day the complaint stays unresolved past 30 days, paid by whoever caused the delay.
A dispute won't remove correct information. Genuine late payments and settled accounts stay. If someone offers to delete accurate entries for a fee, walk away.

Yes. CRIF High Mark is licensed by the RBI under the Credit Information Companies (Regulation) Act, 2005, the same licence held by CIBIL, Experian and Equifax. Its coverage is particularly strong across NBFC, retail and microfinance lending.
You can check your CRIF score free on the FixMyScore app using your mobile number, name, date of birth and PAN. You can also download one free full CRIF credit report a year from the CRIF High Mark website.
No. When you check your own CRIF score, it counts as a soft inquiry and has no effect on the score. Only hard inquiries, which happen when a lender assesses your loan or card application, can pull it down.
Each bureau uses its own scoring model and can hold slightly different data, depending on which lenders reported to it and when. A gap of 20 to 60 points is common and does not by itself mean anything is wrong.
Most banks look for a CRIF score of around 730 or more for an unsecured personal loan, and the best rates usually start near 750. Some NBFCs lend below that, at a higher interest rate. Every lender sets its own cut-off.
From 1 July 2026, RBI rules require lenders to report to credit bureaus four times a month, on the 9th, 16th, 23rd and last day of the month. Your CRIF score can change after any of those updates.
Usually because the lender has not reported the change yet, or reported it after the last update date. If a closed loan still shows as active a month after closure, ask the lender for a closure letter and raise a dispute with CRIF High Mark.
Under RBI rules, a credit report complaint must be resolved within 30 calendar days: 21 days for the lender and 9 days for the bureau. If it is not, you are entitled to compensation of ₹100 for every day of delay.
CRIF stands for Centrale Rischi Finanziari, the Italian group behind CRIF High Mark. In India, CRIF High Mark Credit Information Services is the RBI-licensed credit bureau.
No. FixMyScore is not a credit bureau. It shows you your CRIF High Mark score and report, explains what is affecting it, and helps you improve it. FixMyScore is not TransUnion CIBIL, Experian or Equifax.
