CRIF High Mark is a credit bureau: a company licensed by the Reserve Bank of India to collect your borrowing and repayment history from lenders, keep it on record and turn it into a credit score. It is one of four such bureaus in India, alongside TransUnion CIBIL, Experian and Equifax. It doesn't lend money, and it doesn't approve or reject your loan.
CRIF full form, and where the name comes from
CRIF stands for Centrale Rischi Finanziari, the Italian credit information group that operates in several countries. Its Indian arm is CRIF High Mark Credit Information Services, which came from High Mark, an Indian credit bureau that CRIF acquired. That's why you'll see the score described as a CRIF score, a High Mark score or a CRIF High Mark score. They all mean the same thing.
What CRIF High Mark is allowed to do
Credit bureaus in India work under the Credit Information Companies (Regulation) Act, 2005, and under the RBI's reporting directions. In practice, that licence lets CRIF High Mark do three things:
- Collect your credit data from banks, NBFCs and other regulated lenders, which are required to report to it
- Keep and maintain that record, correcting it when a lender confirms a change
- Share it with lenders that are its members, when they have a permitted reason, such as your loan application
It also issues reports to you about yourself, which is how you get to see what lenders see.
What's in your CRIF report
Notice what isn't there: your salary, your savings balance, your investments, your caste or religion, and your spending at particular shops. Lenders ask for income separately. The bureau only sees credit.
Consumer, commercial and microfinance records
CRIF High Mark keeps more than one kind of record:
- Consumer: your personal loans, cards and other individual borrowing
- Commercial: the borrowing of companies and MSMEs, which lenders read alongside the owner's personal report
- Microfinance: small-ticket loans, including those made through self-help groups, an area where CRIF has long had deep coverage
That last point is one reason NBFCs, small finance banks and microfinance lenders often work with CRIF data. More on that in which lenders check your CRIF score.
Your rights over your own CRIF record
- One free full report a year. RBI rules entitle you to a free full credit report from each bureau, once a year.
- The right to correction. If something is wrong, you can dispute it, and the complaint must be resolved within 30 days. If it isn't, you're owed ₹100 for every day of delay. See how to raise a CRIF dispute.
- Alerts when someone checks you. Bureaus must notify you by SMS or email when a lender views your credit report.
- Checking your own score is free of consequences. It's a soft enquiry and never lowers your score.
Four things CRIF High Mark does not do
- It doesn't approve or reject loans. Lenders make that decision. The bureau supplies the record they read.
- It doesn't keep a blacklist. There's no such list. There are only accurate records, some of which look bad.
- It can't delete accurate information, and neither can anyone you pay to try.
- It doesn't change your data on its own. Corrections come from the lender that reported the entry, which is why disputes go via the lender.
